Boy Scout
Troop 456 of the Church of the Ascension was
chartered in March 1952. The troop was sponsored
by the Men’s Club of the Church of the
Ascension. The Rev. Robert M. Man was the
Rector. The troop met on Tuesday evenings at
7:00 p.m.
The troop was originally given the number 56 and
did not receive the present number until 1961
when the entire Scout Council was reorganized.
The original troop had about thirty-six boys. At
that time, boys who were fourteen or older were
in an “Explorer Crew.” Those under fourteen were
“Boy Scouts.” Later, “Explorers” became a
separate group (“Post”) from the troop.
The troop was sponsored by the Men’s Club until
1958 when the Church became the sponsor under
the direction of the Rev. John C. Clarkson, Jr.,
the assistant Rector. At that time the troop
started meeting on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m.
The following year this time was changed to 7:30
p.m. and the troop has met at that time since.
Over the years the troop developed into a
canoeing troop–camping and canoeing throughout
Florida and southern Georgia with special trips
as far north as North Carolina and as far west
as New Mexico. Fifty-six scouts have received
scouting’s highest rank–Eagle Scout.
After many years of a sound program, membership
had declined to a few scouts. In the best
interest of the scouts' careers, the committee
directed the remaining scouts to other troops
with viable programs. In 2004, another local
troop was searching for a new sponsoring
organization. With the assistance of the
District Commissioner and Council Executive, a
dedicated committee saw the rebirth of Troop
456. The troop never lost their charter, and the
troop continues to grow. Troop 456 still meets
on Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
